Condoms and The Rise of Gonorrhoea: What You Need to Know

Condoms and The Rise of Gonorrhoea: What You Need to Know

Sexually transmitted infections aren’t everyone's favourite conversation starter, but they’re always a hot topic at HANX HQ, particularly Gonorrhea and its recent rapid rise. You may have heard in the news recently that gonorrhoea cases are worryingly on the rise with approximately 54,965 gonorrhoea diagnoses at sexual health services in the first 9 months of 2024, compared to over 85,000 recorded in the whole of 2023 (GOV UK, 2025). We spoke with Dr. Sarah Welsh, gynaecology expert and HANX Co-Founder, for the lowdown on this particular STI and how to stay protected.

The Stats

Recent research from the World Health Organization shows gonorrhoea infections have increased by over 30% globally in the past five years. Even more concerning? These infections are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, making them harder to treat than ever before.

“Superbugs are no laughing matter, and super-gonorrhea is leading the charge”  says Dr. Sarah, “these superbugs become a problem as patients now need multiple rounds of treatment to cure the infection where one used to do the trick.”

Gonorrhoea infection cases are the highest they’ve ever been since records began 1918. Conversely, this isn’t related to more people getting tested (though that’s always a good thing!) - we’re seeing a genuine increase in infection rates - which means even more need to be proactive with your protection.

What is Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is a common bacterial STI that can cause infections in the genitals, rectum, throat, and eyes. It is primarily transmitted through unprotected sex (this includes oral!).

Gonorrhoea can be sneaky - up to 50% of women and 10% of men with the infection show no symptoms. This silent spread means you or your partner/s could be carrying it without knowing. When symptoms do appear, they can include:

  • Unusual discharge

  • Burning sensation when peeing

  • Pain during sex

  • Inflammation in various parts of the body

Left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to serious health complications including pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. Not exactly the kind of souvenir you want from a night of passion!

The Silver Lining

The good news? Scientists are hard at work developing new treatments. Researchers are currently testing a promising single-injection treatment that could potentially eliminate gonorrhoea infections completely - even antibiotic-resistant strains. In early 2024, phase II clinical trials showed a 96% success rate in clearing infections with a single dose, potentially revolutionising treatment options.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) have advised the UK government to roll out a routine vaccination programme for the prevention of Gonnorhea ASAP, they have noted that even with a modest vaccination programme many cases of Gonnorhea could be prevented.

In the meantime, prevention is more important than ever. Why wait for a cure when prevention is already in your hands? (Or pocket. Or bedside drawer. You get the idea.)

Enter: The Humble Condom

Condoms remain the most effective way to prevent STI transmission during sex -reducing your risk of gonorrhoea by approximately 98% when used correctly. That's some serious protection in one tiny package.

Despite this impressive stat, condom use has actually decreased among certain age groups, particularly 18-24 year olds, with many citing the excuse of decreased sensation as their reason for skipping protection.

“Concerns about lack of feeling or less sensation are exactly why we focused on developing our ultra-thin latex condoms. When we created HANX, one of our biggest goals was making protection feel like a natural part of intimacy rather than an interruption or compromise.” Says Dr. Sarah. “With gonorrhoea cases soaring, it's so important that condoms become a key part of any sexual experiences. Remember, even though it might feel awkward bringing it up with your partner beforehand, you’re being sex positive, proactive and properly taking care of yourself.”

The Bottom Line

Taking charge of your sexual health is something to be proud of. With the right tools and information, protection becomes part of the pleasure. Regular STI testing, open communication with partners, and consistent condom use form the holy trinity of sexual wellness. Rising rates of gonorrhoea are concerning, but with awareness and the right precautions, we can all look after ourselves and each other.
